Definition – THEOLOGY is _____________________________________________ ?

Around the room – Answer with a single (as in “one”) word – Growing up, say before you were 20, did you learn more theology from sermons or songs?  Possible Answers:  Sermons –or—Songs –or—Pass

You will be able to DISCUSS this more in a moment, but for now, limit responses to One Word.

Truth put to music remains with us. It’s why we still sing the powerful lyrics of hymns written centuries ago. Speculation and questioning about theology will come and go, but truth remains. Consider these words of Horatio G. Spafford, penned in 1873: My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!/ My sin, not in part but the whole,/ Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,/ Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul! (Keith Getty)

It’s no coincidence that music and faith are deeply entwined in Amy Grant’s life. Standing next to her great-grandmother in church, she learned to appreciate not only the melodies of the old hymns but also their underlying messages, and that potent combination has stayed with her ever since. “I can’t remember one sermon ever preached by a pastor or Sunday school teacher,” she admits. “Even when I’m listening and taking notes, somehow it evaporates. But the hymns—that’s how my theology was shaped.” (Seth Robertson interview)
